The East Indian language in today’s society is not too present amongst us and it can be said that it has died to an extent. Elder East Indians in society tend to speak the language as well as those in East Indian communities, in particular the Southern part of Trinidad, still speak Hindi to an extent especially when it comes to speaking with family. Popular Hindi names which are used are Nana, Nani, Didi, Bhai, chouti bahin, mausi, and mausa. Hindu activist Satnarine Maharaj acknowledge that many younf Hindu boys and girls in today’s society do not know anything about the Hindi language and he has implemented this language in all SDMS primary schools from first year to standard one and in SDMS Secondary schools all form one’s learn the Hindi language. His goal is to allow the young people to learn the language of their ancestors and as well as his aim is to keep the Hindi language alive in Trinidad.
